Background & Drivers

The overall mission of RETAINERGY is to develop an affordable and scalable solution for capturing redundant energy from waste incineration processes and to transform it to power, heating, and cooling services which will generate additional revenues while providing a range of environmental and socio-economic benefits.

A pilot project was initiated in 2024-05 with the aim of designing and implementing a testbed solution in a medical waste incineration facility in Delhi. The experiences made will constitute a platform for a broader roll-out in similar installations in India, and at a later stage in other industry sectors and in neighbouring markets.

Hospitals in India generate large amounts of toxic medical waste that must be incinerated according to regulatory standards. However, the incineration process results in a significant amount of waste heat being released into the atmosphere.

Conventionally, such heat is only partially recovered as steam for sterilization applications whereas the remainder of the waste heat is first cooled off by a gas fired unit and thereafter emitted to the ambient air further aggravating the urban heat island effect.

This initiative which is funded by the government in India and Sweden aims to identify solutions for retaining the waste heat and transforming it to power, heating and cooling.

A pilot installation will be made at a waste incineration installation in Delhi operated by Biotec.

The experiences made will constitute a basis for a further roll-out of similar installations in India, and beyond. The market potential in India alone is 250 units

Broader Market Opportunity

The experiences made will constitute a basis for a further roll-out of similar installations in India, and beyond. The market potential in India alone is 250 units.

A market research exercise is underway with he aim of making a detailed analysis of the market opportunities in the medical waste sector in India.

At a later stage we will conduct a market study of the broader opportunities for similar solutions in India and in neighbouring countries.
